[joh]: well this is certainly a happening place! can i be the first to ask a question or two : firstly i don't see the RSS feed link on my forum and secondly placing a url or mailto link in between square brackers does not have the desired effect replacing the url with link etc
Posted at Jul 29/2003 10:09 PM:
[joh]: oh and just out of interest when i try to use the RSS feed from this site i get the error "the xml parser could not parse the RSS data"

Posted at Jul 30/2003 05:20 PM:
[joh]: well joh in answer to the first two : you should upgrade your version of courseforum

Posted at Jul 30/2003 05:21 PM:

Terry: How can I remove a page? You can simply erase the content, or the course's administrator can permanently delete the entire page

Stephen Hryncewicz: I have been asked by some faculty members at the school I work at, if it is possible to do away with the 'Changes' sidebar, in order to free up some space. Is that too tightly integrated into ProjectForum?

[Mark]: Some of the themes (such as the 'default' theme used on this site) de-emphasize the changes area, making it less intrusive. It's certainly possible to create new themes that get rid of it altogether.

[Mary Lindsay]: I'm new to OS X. How do I access the hostname or IP information for my computer so that others may plug into the courseforum? Can I find the info under "sharing?" It gives me an ftp address and a personal web sharing "http" address. If it's the latter do I route through the computer's website or my personal website? Thank you for any assistance you can provide. If you're in sharing, and click on "Personal Web Sharing" you'll see a message saying something like "the computer's website is at http://192.168.0.243"... because CourseForum runs on port 3455 by default, you'll want to give out the address (in this example) of "http://192.168.0.243:3455".

Posted at Feb 17/2004 06:32 PM:
[Mary Lindsay]: Thanks for your help. I followed your directions, but the computer website information that comes up under "Personal Web Sharing" includes the words dialup and earthlink.net. Plus the numbers change each time I go on and off the internet. I tried using the address that was indicated without going off the network, but it still didn't work. I contacted Apple tech support and they didn't think I had the capacity to do what is necessary for this to work. I can't find user requirements anywhere on the site. Can you lead me there? Thanks! Realistically, you need a full time connection to make the best use of the software... you may want to investigate our hosting service [link] instead

[John Lawrence]: Hello from Canada. After visiting your demo site and using your software I am definitely hooked. This is an excellent program and I love that you support multiple OS platforms! That said, I would love some help on how to set up/identify an address that people can use to log into my course? The URL that comes up when I open the course on my computer comes up with http://127.0.0.1:3455 however I've learned that "127" refers to my own computer. I also understand that the "3455" is the port, on which my computer is using to communicate with CourseForum. Any assistance you can provide would be helpful.

[Mark]: Look in 'System Preferences' (on Mac) or 'Control Panel' to find out your real IP address.. you're right, the whole "127.0.0.1" means your local machine, but only when you're on it.. if you still have trouble, email support@courseforum.com

[Sybille]: I use the free version and would like to say thank you: I consider buying the one group license, is there a student licence for private use? The regular license fee for CourseForum already incorporates a substantial educational discount.

[espringer]: So far, this looks like it avoids the cumbersome aspects of many online course tools... We like to think so!

Posted at Jan 13/2005 04:10 PM:
[espringer]: Wow, that was a fast reply! I have a question: I'd like to make sure students using my course forum do *not* readily upload file attachments, though I expect to buy 4.1 and like being able to add images to my pages. Is there a way I can disable this feature for students? (My university suffers from an epidemic of MS Word attachments containing only a paragraph of text! :| )

Posted at Jan 13/2005 04:13 PM:
[espringer]: Or perhaps I don't want to disable attachments altogether -- if they want to use them in the projects pages, or on their personal student pages, that's fine. But I really want the discussion pages to "stay in line", and I'm afraid some students are actually more familiar with attaching documents than with copying and pasting the contents of a document. At least, my email in-box would suggest this, even after exhortations to put the text *into* the email...

Posted at Jan 13/2005 04:24 PM:
[espringer]: There's only one thing I'm not wild about so far: the "Posted at..." timestamp seems to create "visual noise", especially in scanning exchanges of brief comments. Could there be an option to make it right-justified, or put it at the end of each post, offset somehow, or greyed?

(I like the weblog page at courseforum, BTW... its interface is very nice in making the timestamp inconspicuous.)

Posted at Jan 13/2005 04:31 PM:
[espringer]: One more comment: some of my italics markups are not working. Even on the same page, sometimes one will work and another will not. It's not that I'm "curly-quoting" them or anything; in fact some of the non-working ones are for timestamp text. I've tried copying the working ones to replace the non-working pairs of single-quotes, but with no luck... ?? Me again: Never mind, it turns out that I had a stray bracket earlier on the page, and that seems to have thrown everything off.

[Scott Moore]: I'm going to be teaching a course with 3 sections of about 300 students each at my University. I have my own relatively robust Linux server to host the site for my course. On this site I'm planning on having all of my course information, assignments, announcements, etc.

I'm worried about so many people accessing, and potentially changing, pages at the same time. So, a couple questions:

Many have used it with that sized course. The software handles does some automated merging that handles many conflicts. True conflicts work like this.. first person to save wins. Second person trying to save gets a message saying the page was saved already, and offers them a chance to make more changes before saving (or cancelling out).. they can see the version history etc.

Renee: Nice package! In playing around with it, I've found that I cannot attach some pdf files. Simple ones seem to attach fine but I keep getting a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error when attaching more complex PDFs. I even recreated the PDF and made sure that it was viewable. Is there any such limitation? No... in the past we've heard of instances of this happening for large attachments when there was a bad network connection. Might this be the case for you?

Posted at Jun 02/2005 01:40PM: Bob Whipple: How do I create passwords for separate project forums so that other students can't get into that forum? Within each project, go into the 'Project Admin' screen. You can place a password on the project to restrict access. Note that in projects, everyone will share the same password, its not a separate password for each user.

Rosemary Schneider I am not comfortable with this program at this present time. I am trying to connect with my group (I cannot find their names)from the James Madison University Teacher Academy that met in June of this year, in connection with the Virginia Department of Education. Can you help me please? They are running their own server, not using this public demo server. Unfortunately, I don't have the site's web address.

[Patrick]: is there a way to manually delete files? some of my pages wont render because they have "textarea" ending tags, which project forum does not like at all... you can go directly to the 'edit' or 'versions' page for example... just look at the url by hovering the mouse over... and repair things that way

Pat Thompson: It would be great if CF gave an option to restrict access to a page via password (both personal and administrator). I would like to have students post their homework to a page, and then me post comments on their homework back to that page. But if anyone can view the page, then there is no way to control other students copying a student's work. This is a great use of the "Projects" feature; give each student their own project within the course, protected with a password.

Can I use this for Japanese language? Would like to know before submitting to my clients. They are Japanese. They can use Japanese within the page, however the user interface is presently English only.

shryn: Sure you can. Take a look at our scchool page in CF

khurram shahzad what is requirement for server version of course fourm? What type of database we will going to use with it? See http://www.courseforum.com/cf/download.html ... no external database is needed, as this is part of CourseForum itself

John W: Is there some guidance for installing updates/upgrades? From the FAQ... How do I upgrade to a newer version and still keep my data? Shut down the existing ProjectForum server program if running, replace the application with the new one, and restart. On Windows, just running the new installer will leave any existing data intact.'

[Pat Thompson]: Is there a way to enter multiple emails at once (e.g., separated by commas) into the email Track Changes field? I tried commas and semicolons, but neither worked. I want to add 30 email addresses Not at present
